LOVELAND, COLO. – May 20, 2013 – McWHINNEY and the Centerra Metropolitan District are pleased to announce the installation of eight new stone sculptures in The Chapungu Sculpture Park at Centerra. The sculptures replace eight of the original pieces installed at the time of the park’s opening, and embrace many of the permanent themes of the park, which include: Nature & the Environment, Village Life, The Role of Elders, Spirit World, the Role of Women, Custom & Legend, Family, and Children.

The sculptures, listed below, are all from Zimbabwean artists of the Shona tribe and feature an eclectic mix of subjects that include marriage, appreciation of nature, and the competitive nature of children:

“We are excited about these additions to the park, as we recognize that updating and rotating the art at Chapungu is key to keeping the displays fresh and encouraging visitors to return,” said Jay Hardy, Centerra Vice President and General Manager.

The complete collection of 82 hand-carved stone sculptures can be found throughout the spacious 26-acre park located in Centerra east of I-25 and Highway 34 directly behind Macy’s. In addition to one-of-a-kind sculptures, the park features natural wetlands, landscaped gardens, 1.5 miles of paved paths, space for summer concerts, weddings and special events, and a variety of sitting areas designed to encourage restful contemplation.

The Chapungu Sculpture Park is the first permanent exhibit of its kind in the United States. Each distinctive sculpture is handmade from the indigenous stones of Zimbabwe, the native country of Roy Guthrie and Marcey Mushore, directors of Chapungu Sculpture Park. The expressive nature of the sculptures themselves, coupled with the park’s natural habitat, encourages visitors to experience the artwork in relation to the natural setting. The park is open seven days a week from 6 am to 10:30 pm, year round, and includes a restroom facility with a dog-friendly water fountain, welcoming every member of the family.
